PrintStash, Manyfold, and Orynt3D can all replace a folder full of poorly named STL files. They differ most in where they run and what they expect you to do after finding a model.

Start with the deployment model

Orynt3D is the simplest choice when one person manages the library from one computer. Install the desktop app, point it at local or network folders, and keep using those files with other desktop tools. Orynt3D says a server product is coming, but the current application is not a shared web service.

PrintStash and Manyfold both run as web applications. That means another browser on the network can use the same library, and different people can have their own accounts. It also means you are responsible for a Docker stack, storage, upgrades, and backups.

If running another service is the part you want to avoid, choose Orynt3D. If a household, workshop, or makerspace needs one library, compare PrintStash and Manyfold.

Decide what the catalogue should remember

Manyfold has the broader descriptive model. It records creators, sources, licenses, related models, supported and unsupported files, collections, likes, comments, and other catalogue information. Its public and federated features suit a library that should also work as a publishing surface.

Orynt3D is flexible without imposing a server-side schema. Custom attributes and Boolean searches work well when you already know how you want to describe a collection. It is especially useful for queries that combine several properties across folder-backed files.

PrintStash concentrates on manufacturing data. It parses slicer, material, nozzle, layer height, temperatures, estimated duration, and filament use from G-code and 3MF files. A model can have several G-code revisions, each with notes, an outcome such as known_good or failed, and an optional recommended marker.

All three support useful metadata. The difference is whether you care most about the model’s provenance, your own filing system, or the settings and results of printing it.

Keep existing folders or move into a managed store

You do not have to abandon a NAS with any of these tools.

PrintStash can index a local or NAS folder in place as a shared volume. It mirrors the folder structure in the web interface and can write new uploads back to that volume. Write-back adds new files, while model deletion and volume removal leave the source bytes untouched. You can also use its managed local vault or S3-compatible object storage.

Manyfold scans models on disk and includes tools for organizing and diagnosing a library. Orynt3D stays closest to the desktop filesystem because those folders remain the working library.

The practical distinction is ownership. Orynt3D is a view over files used directly from a computer. PrintStash and Manyfold add a server-side database and workflows around those files.

What happens after you find the file?

Manyfold’s printer integration has grown up: its features page lists direct sends of sliced files through OctoPrint, Moonraker, and other supported printer APIs as available today. That fits a workflow where the catalogue supplies the file and the printer host handles the rest.

PrintStash keeps more of the print loop in the library, and the difference shows after the send rather than at it. A G-code revision carries an outcome of needs_test, known_good, failed, or archived, with exactly one revision marked as the recommended print; parsed slicer settings ride along on every revision for side-by-side comparison; jobs record against the revision that produced them, and Moonraker reads back measured duration and filament use. Orynt3D opens a file in an external application. That is a sensible desktop workflow, but it does not create a shared record of which revision was sent or whether it worked.

Which one should you install?

Choose PrintStash when the library should answer questions such as which slice worked, what changed between revisions, what is stored on a printer, and what the completed job consumed.

Choose Manyfold when creator and source metadata, public or private publishing, federation, broad format coverage, and community features matter more than revision outcomes.

Choose Orynt3D when you want strong desktop search and organization over existing folders without maintaining a web server.

There is overlap, but the deployment decision usually narrows the field first. After that, choose the metadata and post-file workflow you actually expect to use.
